WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

Essential oils are the subtle, volatile liquids that are distilled from plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, bushes and seeds. An ancient process, oil distillation is a delicate and precise art that has been almost forgotten. Science is just now re-discovering the incredible healing power of essential oils, which are the life blood of the plant kingdom, and beginning to acknowledge their value.

THE ESSENTIAL BEGINNING.
(History of...)

According to the translation of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and Chinese manuscripts, priests and physicians were using extracted oils from plants for healing thousands of years before Christ. These essential oils are the earliest known medicines, pre-dating the U.S. Food and Drug Administration by some 6,000 years or more.

Highly revered, the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt routinely exchanged Blue Lotus Oil with the kings of India for slaves, gold and other precious goods. And so it is, essential oils were at one time in history considered more valuable than gold.

When King Tut's tomb was opened in 1922, 350 liters of oil were discovered in alabaster jars. Plant waxes had solidified in a thickened residue around the inside of the container opening, leaving the liquified oil in excellent condition.

In 1817 the Ebers Papyrus was discovered, which was over 870 feet long and was referred to as a medicinal scroll. It dated back to 1500 B.C. and mentioned over 800 different formulations of herbal prescriptions and remedies. Other scrolls indicated that the Egyptians had a very high success rate in treating 81 different diseases. Many mixtures contained myrrh and honey. Myrrh is recognized today for its ability to help with infections of the skin and throat and to regenerate skin tissue. Myrrh was also used for embalming because of its effectiveness in preventing bacterial growth.

Anchored in Scripture:

There are 188 references to these oils (or the plant they are derived from) in the Bible. Some precious oils, such as frankincense, myrrh, galbanum, rosemary, hyssop, cassia, cinnamon and spikenard were used for anointing and healing of the sick. There were three wise men (magi) who brought gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ child. Clinical research now shows that frankincense and myrrh are two of the most powerful immune-stimulating substances available, containing very high amounts of immune-stimulating properties. Perhaps the three wise men were wise in ways beyond our knowledge.

Recent excavation of the ancient city called Gilead, has unearthed the remains of a fortress like building used for the manufacture of balsam oil. This "balm of Gilead" noted in Jeremiah 8:22, had long been famous in antiquity for its nearly miraculous properties to HEAL WOUNDS. In fact, the balsam oil of Gilead was so famous that the conquering Roman emperor Titus (79-81 A.D.), after conquering Gilead, displayed branches from Gilead's balsam trees in his triumphal march through Rome.

So precious was this oil to the commerce of Gilead, the exact manufacturing process was kept a closely guarded secret. So much so, archaeologists uncovered an inscription carved into the floor of a local synagogue that reads, "Whoever reveals the secret of the village to the gentiles, the one whose eyes roam over the entire earth and see's what is concealed will uproot this person and his seed from under the sun."

It should be noted when Joseph's brothers tried to sell him to a caravan of Ishmaelites passing by, Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, purchased in Gilead, on their way to Egypt.

STORAGE OF ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils are volatile substances and can be easily evaporated, and deteriorated by heat and light. Always store essential oils away from heat sources or hot places. Keep away from light (which is why they are best kept in dark glass bottles). Keep your bottles tightly capped and airtight. Do not store them in a moisture laden place such as the bathroom. Many essential oils have strong chemical components that can break down plastics, which is why it is best to store them or their blends in glass containers.
Essential oils generally have a shelf life of 1-3 years. The citrus oils are the most easily deteriorated, so it's a good idea to use them up within 9 months to a year. Refrigeration will retard the deterioration process, but will not stop it altogether. Also, when you dispense your oils don't leave them sitting with the caps off. Recap them tightly after each use, to protect them from evaporation, and oxidation.

ESSENTIAL OIL MEASUREMENTS

1/4 teaspoon = 15 drops
5 ml = 1/6 oz. = 100 drops approx.
6 ml = 1/4 oz. = 160 drops "
10 ml = 1/3 oz. = 200 drops
15 ml = 1/2 oz. = 300 drops
30 ml = 1 Oz. = 6 teaspoons = approx 2 tablespoons

In massage blends (oils or lotions) a 2-3% solution is recommended to obtain the most potent results and while avoiding irritation. For a 2-3% blend, add 25-30 drops total essential oil to 2 oz of base (carrier) oil, or 10-15 drops essential oil to 1 ounce (about 2 tablespoons) of base oil.

CARRIER OILS

Carrier oils are the fixed oils, generally vegetable oils, that are used as the base oil for your essential oil blends, and are usually used for massage oils, and facials, and hair treatments.

Best carrier oils for dry skin are Sweet Almond, olive oil (but the olive has a strong odor), Avocado oil. For normal skin there is calendula oil, jojoba, sesame, soybean, and plain old corn oil. Oily skin types can use grapeseed, hazelnut, and sunflower, walnut, and most other nut oils.

Some oils are recommended because they have specific uses. For instance, walnut oil is a fine carrier oil when used in hair and scalp products. Sunflower is good for normal to oily skin. It is thin and light and has virtually no scent. Almond oil is a fine quality carrier oil for any blend, although it can go rancid sooner than some others. A way to preserve these is to add a small amount of wheat germ oil or vitamin E oil, or even a couple of Vitamin E capsules to your blend. The best carrier oil is actually jojoba, as it does not go rancid, and is healing and helpful of itself. It has the unique ability to get into the follicles. It stimulates hair growth and is great for the scalp. It is listed on many commercial hair products. It also makes a great base for making perfume oils.

Calendula oil made from infused marigold flowers is a fine oil for aromatherapy blends. It contains lots of carotene and vitamin A which is healthful for the skin. Grapeseed oil is lightweight and absorbs easily into the skin. Apricot Kernal is another excellent lightweight oil. Try to buy only pure carrier oils that are. Many aromatherapy dealers sell massage oils which are a blend of 2, 3, or more various carrier oils. Some will include amounts of some of the more exotic oils which are not easy to get or too expensive to buy. These massage oil blends are also nice to use and saves you from making your own. You just add the essential oils of your choice, and you are ready to begin your massage!

HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS

There are three ways to use YL Essential Oils.

1. Topically
2. Inhalation
3.Supplements


Topically:

With exceptions, the oils may be applied directly to your skin. You can put the oils anywhere except in your eyes and in your ears. The eye application is around the eyes. For ear application, massage one drop on the auricular points (outside area) of the ears, or put one drop on a cotton ball which may be put in the ear at the canal opening. Avoid contact of the oils with jewelry, as metal alters the healing properties of the oils. Likewise, do not apply the oils over make-up, as chemicals in the make-up will have an adverse affect on the healing properties of the oils.

Apply 1 to 2 drops of Essential Oils on 2 to 3 locations on your body two times a day for good health, or four times a day if you really need it. Rub the oil briefly and allow it to absorb for 2 to 3 minutes before you put on clothing.

When applying the oils for general use, many people choose to apply them on the inside of the elbow where the skin is soft exposing a large artery. Drop the oils neat (direct and undiluted), from a height of 5 or 6 inches above the skin. This allows for the frequency of the oils to synergize with that of the your body's aura for greater benefit. Once on the skin, massage in with the wrist of the opposite hand in a circular motion. Repeat the procedure on the other arm. Favorite oils like Lavender are frequently applied in this manner.

NOTE:
Some oils such as cinnamon, cloves, oregano and thyme may cause a stinging or hot sensation, especially if you have fair skin. These oils should be diluted with 1 to 6 drops of essential oils to 15 to 20 drops V-6 Mixing Oil or other carrier oil & applied to skin. If the skin becomes hot or if you you accidently rub your eyes, just put a little V-6 on the skin or in your eye and the hot sensation will soon stop. Never use water as water drives the oils inward and creates more heat.

If in doubt, always begin by applying the oils to a small area of skin to test for any possible reaction. If you receive any sensation from the application, dilute the oils with V-6 Mixing oil or carrier oil before applying a full application.

Inhalation:

Breathing the oils stimulates your body to create antibodies, endorphins, and neurotransmitters, all vital to building good health and a strong immune system. There are several ways to breathe the oils:

1. Diffuse: Diffusing oils into the air (with a diffuser) kills airborne bacteria, viruses, microbes, etc. The oil will also send its oxygenating molecules into the air increasing O2 levels in the air. In the beginning, it's best to run the diffuser for only 15 to 30 minutes twice a day. When you feel that your body is accustomed to the oils, you may diffuse for longer periods of time or more frequently.

2. Keep a bottle of oil with you at all times. When you want to inhale the oils, simply remove the lid, hold close to nose and breathe in. Several breath cycles is sufficient, several times a day. Another method is to apply the oil neat on the upper lip and breathe.

3. While riding in a car, apply oil to a cotton ball or handkerchief and place on the dash where the vent can blow the oil into the air. The same procedure can be used in the home. Place the cotton ball in an air vent.

Supplements:

Supplements are formulated with essential oils as food flavoring & for their high oxygenating molecules, frequency and cell soluability. This helps in the delivery of nutrients to the cells. By using the supplements, you will feel significant improvements in your health quickly.

Application of Oils...

Vita Flex Points:

Nerves that are connected to different organs in your body all end in your feet or ankles. These nerve endings in your feet are referred to as vita flex points. You can either apply oil to the specific point on your feet or you can coat the entire bottoms of your feet and ankles with oil. Here is a general guide for application;

1. Pour three or four drops of essential oil in the palm of your left hand. Take your right hand's 2nd and 3rd fingers and spread the oil around in your left palm making 3 circles clockwise. (This helps activate the oil with your own energies).

2. Take your left hand with the spread oil in it and rub onto your left foot. Make sure to rub the oil to all areas of your foot. Then repeat Step 1 and 2 with the right hand and foot. We start with our feet first because our feet have the largest pores on our body and can absorb the oils quickly.

3. After you complete Steps 1 and 2 with both hands and feet, cup your hands and breathe in the oils on your hands taking 10 full deep breaths (This process really helps the body to absorb the oils more fully).

4. After oiling your feet, repeat Step 1 and apply directly to a specific area that the particular oil is good for.

5. You may now start the same process again with another oil.

Helpful Hints:

* Layering oils using the above steps is perfectly fine and is an excellent practice in the morning after showering and before bedtime.

* Start your layering process with an essential oil, that balances the body.

* There is a difference between layering and mixing the oils. Do not mix oils together unless you are using the YL V-6 Mixing Oil or other carrier oil and using their directions.

* Always drop the oil in your hands first. Do not touch the bottle to your skin.

Have fun! the oils are truly a blessing and to be enjoyed. Practice Steps 1 and 2 above on a friend or spouse. Take your oils with you wherever you go & by all means SHARE THEM!

Oils for depression.

Basil 8 drops

Mix according to your spirit.


Old recipe for depression is

Some EO Recipes



Mood Elevating baths

1. 2.

5 drops bergamot 4 drops patchouli
5 drops rosemary 3 drops bergamot
5 drops benzoin 3 drops clary sage
1 teaspoon carrier oil 3 drops geranium
2 drops palmarosa
1 teaspoon carrier oil

Fill tub with warm/hot (add l cup epsom salts if available) Dilute essential oils in carrier oil and pour into bath and swirl to disperse oils.


CARPET FRESHENER

50 drops lime
30 drops orange
20 drops patchouli
1/2 cup bicarbonate of soda

Mix ingredients in a glass jar and tighten the cap. Set aside for 24 hours to allow the aromas to permeate the powder. Sprinkle over carpeting, leave for 10 to 15 minutes and vacuum.

The smell stays a while in your vacuum and every time you vacuum the room is again filled with fragrance.

REJUVENATING FOOTBATH

4 drops eucalyptus
4 drops pine
4 drops peppermint
3 drops geranium
1 teaspoon carrier oil

dilute essential oils in carrier oil add to basin of warm water. Swirl to disperse oils and relax for 15 minutes.


INSECT BITE SOOTHER

2 drops juniper berry
2 drops tea tree
1 drop lemon
1 teaspoon borage

Mix formula and apply to bite every few hours


FORMULAS FOR AROMALAMPS

Breathe more easy Refreshing

5 drops spearmint 8 drops lime
5 drops lemon 4 drops myrtle
5 drops pine 8 drops spearmint
5 drops lavender


Romance Stress reduction

7 drops ylang ylang 10 drops sandalwood

Oils & Weight Loss


Here are some ways the oils can help with the "battle of the bulge". Aromatherapy can help in this area. Those of you who are not overweight will find the cellulite stuff interesting.

Aromatherapy & Weight Loss

Essential oils can act as wonderful aids to the serious slimmer, if diet diet and exercise are also attended to. Often, a sluggish circulation & water retention are problems which plague persons who are overweight, as well as a slower metabolic rate.

There are some essential oils that can help here. As Juniper oil is a natural diuretic, it is helpful to have a Juniper bath at least once a week. Used regularly, it really does work by causing an increase in the flow of water from the body, and, along with the liquid goes the toxic waste that, unless eliminated, builds up in the body of the overweight person. Makes sense, right? Now for anyone with a small bust, but large hips and thighs, then it would be preferable to have a Juniper hip bath; just sit in the bath but don't lie down because you do not want to lose any weight from your breasts. Some people tend to over-eat when feeling depressed about size or shape & when an eating binge threatens, it would be preferable to have a Clary Sage and Ylang Ylang bath. These 2 are anti-depressants. The uplifting aromatic waters may just give you enough of a lift to make you proud of yourself, and not want to take 2 steps back by eating excessive quantities of food. Also, regular bathing with essential oils will improve the tone of the entire body, the clarity of the skin, and, generally, make you feel fitter and more determined to fight the flab!

Helpful oils for overweight problems are as follows:

For Reducing fatty tissue: Juniper, Fennel, Lemon
For General Weight Loss: Bergamot, Fennel, Lavender, Grapefruit, & Onion
oil (I don't recommend the smell of this one) <G> You can always eat
the onions. (Not fried though)
Stimulating to the Metabolism - Caraway, Cumin, Cypress, Fennel,
Immortelle, Lemon, Oregano, Rosemary, Tarragon, Grapefruit oils
For Cellulite: Best oils are Caraway, Cypress, Fennel, Grapefruit,
Juniper, Lavender, Orange, Oregano, Rosemary, Frankincense
Reducing Water Retention: Anise, Benzoin, Black Pepper, Grapefruit,
Camphor, Cardamom, Cedarwood, Cypress, Fennel, Juniper, Parsley,
Rosemary, Sage, Sandalwood (Also onion, and garlic oils, but better
to just cook with these)
Detoxify the System: Fennel, Garlic, Geranium, Lemon, Helichrysum, Lime,
Juniper, Lemon, Parsley
Appetite Reducing Oils: Bergamot, Juniper, Lavender (best one), and Onion
to reduce hunger.

Jeanne Rose, in her Aromatherapy book recommends the following program
for weight loss:

1. Drink plenty of water and no Tea, Coffee or Alcohol,
2. Eat simple nourishing foods, about 1200 calories per day. Include in
your day's allowance 1 serving each of Orange, Apple, Tomato, and
Carrot to encourage good elimination. Eat several vegetable servings,
a giant salad, and vegetable or animal protein.
3. Drink Obesity Tea (see recipe below)
4. Take daily aromatherapy baths
5. Scrub and rub cellulite deposits daily with a loofah or hemp brush,
using some of the essential oil blends.
6. Get some exercise every day! For massage in fatty areas, she also
recommends not using oils which are fatty of themselves, but to use
mixtures of alchohol/water, or vinegar/water, or even to just mix the
essential oils with plain water, to make a friction lotion. I
personally, think rose water or orange flower water would be nice.
Remember, instead of using a carrier oil, you can always use an
unscented light lotion. These can be found in many drugstores. For
example Neutrogena, unscented lotion, or Oil of Olay unscented lotion
for sensitive skin. These are very lightweight, and absorb quickly.
The essential oils mix very well into these also.

Here is the *Obesity Tea* recipe:
juice of one Lemon
finely chopped peel of 1/2 Lemon
1 drop Lemon oil
1 drop Lovage oil
12 ounces of Soda water.
Stir thoroughly and drink once per day before breakfast.

Now for some essential oil recipes for helping you in your weight loss
efforts:

Reducer Blend
20 drops Cypress
15 drops Lemon
10 drops Juniper
Mix into 2 ounces carrier oil or water for a massage blend.

Anti-Cellulite Massage
10 drops Fennel
10 drops Juniper
10 drops Lavender
15 drops Rosemary
Mix into 2 ounces carrier oil or water/your choice.

Cellulite Reducer Massage
4 drops Pine
4 drops Juniper
4 drops Fennel
4 drops Lime
4 drops Cypress
Into 1 ounce of a carrier.

Lymphatic Cleanser Massage
10 drops Eucalyptus
15 drops Lemongrass
10 drops Rosemary
10 drops Lemon
Into 2 oz carrier oil/ or water.

Reduce Edema Massage Blend
10 drops Chamomile (preferably Roman)
15 drops Lavender
20 drops Juniper
Into 2 oz carrier oil/or water.

Obesity Massage #1
20 drops Fennel
15 drops Patchouli
10 drops Juniper
Into 2 oz. carrier oil

Obesity massage #2
15 drops Lavender
20 drops Sandalwood
10 drops Patchouli
Into 2 oz. carrier oil. Alternate these 2 blends daily for four
weeks.

Bath Soak
2 drops Frankincense
2 drops Rosemary
4 drops Juniper
Use at least 3 times per week.


Now, by reading the properties of the essential oils above, and the recipes just listed, you probably get the idea here. You can make up your own baths, and/or massage blends from those listed above. Just remember, go with about 8-10 drops total per bath, and about 30-40 drops per 2 ounces of carrier oil for massage. Not everyone has every single oil on hand that the recipes might call for. So read the lists above, and just use the oils that you do have on hand to make your own. Need any help with this? Essential oils do have many properties which can help you to lose weight, normalize your metabolism, and uplift your depressed moods when they come. Another factor here is motivation. Whether it is motivation to diet or to exercise, or whatever, you must have it in order to get started on a weight loss program. So, with that said, here are some Essential oils for;

MOTIVATION and ENERGY: Bergamot, Lemon, Eucalyptus, Sandalwood, Basil, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Sage, Thyme, Rosemary, and Patchouli (cures apathy) I hope this little piece will be of some help to any of you who have weight problems. If you noticed, in this section, Juniper and Lemon, have come out on top as the best two weight loss oils going. As I may have said before, there are no miracle cures for overweight, but aromatherapy can help! So, let's get motivated everybody. Get up and dance. Get some exercise & take those aromatic baths. Am I starting to sound like Richard Simmons here? LOL. I like to light the aroma lamp, with an excercise blend, put on an excercise video, and go for it. Once you start doing this little ritual, you want to find that half hour to hour that it takes, because it is so much fun and makes you feel so good. It would be nice to take an aroma bath after your excercise using some of the weight loss or detoxifying oils. Try it. It increases your sense of well being and smells good too.

Here's a couple of excercise blends for the aroma lamp or diffuser (these will help you to breathe more easily during Aerobics, Sports, or other Excercise):

Blend #1:
4 drops Peppermint
4 drops Eucalyptus
4 drops Cajeput
3 drops Lemon

Blend #2
5 drops Lime
5 drops lavender
3 drops Eucalyptus
2 drops Clove

ARTHRITIS or RHEUMATISM:

Outdoorsy Aromatherapy



INSECT BITES or STINGS:
Lavender and tea tree and great for insect bites.
The following formulas will help soothe the area and relieve itching and
discomfort. Apply the formula to the bite every few hours:

Remedy #1
1 teaspoon Aloe Vera gel
5 drops Geranium

Remedy #2
1 teaspoon flaxseed
2 drops Juniper
2 drops tea tree
1 drop lemon

Remedy #3
5 drops Lavender (or Chamomile)
into 1 Teaspoon Aloe Vera gel

In a pinch, you can always just apply 1 drop lavender, or chamomile or tea
tree (undiluted) to the bite. It helps!

INSECT REPELLENTS:

Rub jojoba oil into the skin prior to spraying the formula.

10 drops lavender
10 drops eucalyptus
5 drops citronella
into 1 ounce of purified water or unscented vodka.

or Try:
10 drops Geranium
4 drops cedarwood
5 drops sweet bay
5 drops lime
into 1 ounce pure water or vodka (as above)

Another mixture, is:
10 drops Citronella
5 drops Geranium
5 drops Lavender
5 drops Lemon or Lemongrass
into 1 ounce pure water or vodka (as above)

If you are using alcohol in one of the above blends, it is good to add 10
drops of jojoba oil to your mixture, as it will protect from the skin drying
effects of the alcohol.

Other good general insect repellent essential oils are: Basil, Bay Laurel,
Cedarwood, Clove, Geranium, Lemon, Lemongrass, Mugwort, Orange, Pennyroyal,
Peppermint. Best essential oils for repelling fleas are Eucalyptus,
Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Pennyroyal, Rosemary, and Tea Tree.

Many people experience discomfort while traveling. Essential oils most
helpful are Ginger, Lavender, and Peppermint. Ginger and Peppermint are most
helpful for travel sickness. These formulas will help you have an enjoyable
trip. Massage into the abdomen, chest, back, and shoulders 1 hour before
traveling, and during the trip, as needed.

5 drops Chamomile
5 drops Ginger
5 drops Peppermint
4 drops Geranium
Into one ounce of carrier oil, as a travel massage blend.

Another Blend for Travel:
5 drops Wood Rose
5 drops Ginger
5 drops Lemongrass
5 drops Lavender
Into one ounce of carrier oil, as above.

Another comfy travel blend is:
5 drops Mandarin
4 drops Lavender
4 drops Juniper
4 drops allspice
3 drops Geranium
Into one ounce of carrier oil.


It is absolutely to your benefit to use a sunscreen while you are outdoors
for any length of time. But, should an unforseen sunburn occur, here are
some helps:

3 drops Lavender
2 drops Chamomile
into 1 teaspoon Aloe Vera Gel.

or,
3 drops Chamomile
2 drops Geranium
into 1 teaspoon Aloe Vera gel

or simply use:
5 drops of either Lavender OR Chamomile
into the 1 teaspoon of carrier

Those of you who are allergic to aloe vera, or cannot get it, can substitute
with sweet almond oil or avocado oil. Gently apply these formulas on the
sunburned area several times a day.
