| To Scandinavians, runes are what we call letters when we write them in stone, and so
can't use a Parker, but have to use a chisel instead <g>. This form of material and
tool will then account for the funny angular shapes, of course. The vikings wrote on memorial stones about their feats and valour, and so to this day, the Futhark, or rune alphabet, has been preserved. In early medieval times, some runes were carved on little wooden sticks and thrown in the lap of for instance a young lady, who would then fall hopelessly and helplessly in love with the conniving young rascal throwing it. This was because the runes made out a magic formula, a spell. So the "casting" of the spell was actually real enough, fortune or misfortune was literally thrown at you!
